چکیده

Abstract We examine the drought variability over conterminous United States (CONUS) for 1915–2018 using Noah-MP land surface model. different model options on reconstruction, including optional representation of groundwater and dynamic vegetation phenology. Over our 104-yr reconstruction period, we identify 12 great droughts that each covered at least 36% CONUS lasted 5 months. The tend to have smaller areas when and/or are included in configuration. detect a small decreasing trend dry area coverage all configurations. 45 major baseline (with greater than 23.6% CONUS) are, average, somewhat less severe droughts. find tends increase duration both droughts, primarily by leading earlier onset (some due short-lived recovery from previous drought) or later demise (groundwater anomalies lag precipitation anomalies). In contrast, shorten duration, (closed stoma dead reduces ET loss during droughts). On regional basis, U.S. Southwest (Southeast) has longest (shortest) durations. Consistent with work, subregions except decreased. effects vary regionally differences depths (hence connectivity surface) types.

century drought in the conterminous United States

Droughts can be characterized by their severity, frequency and duration, and areal extent. Depth-area-duration analysis, widely used to characterize precipitation extremes, provides a basis for evaluation of drought severity when storm depth is replaced by an appropriate measure of drought severity. We used gridded precipitation and temperature data to force a physically-based macroscale hydrol...

Trends in 20th century drought over the continental United States

[1] We used a simulated data set of hydro-climatological variables to examine for 20th century trends in soil moisture, runoff, and drought characteristics over the conterminous United States (U.S.). An increasing trend is apparent in both model soil moisture and runoff over much of the U.S., with a few decreasing trends in parts of the Southwest. The trend patterns were qualitatively similar t...

Evapotranspiration Intensifies over the Conterminous United States

Using long-term (1948–1996) pan evaporation measurements, a 6% increase in warm-season (May–October) actual evapotranspiration (ET ) is computed over the conterminous United States between 1949 and 1996 via the complementary hypothesis. This predicted increase in ET is in agreement with the measured precipitation increase for the same period if long-term wet-surface ET is assumed to be constant...

Modeled Areal Evaporation Trends over the Conterminous United States

Long-term (1961–1990) areal evapotranspiration (AE) has been modeled with the help of 210 stations of the Solar and Meteorological Surface Observation Network within the conterminous United States. Modeled AE, averaged over all stations, has shown an overall increase of about 2–3% in the period 1961–1990, both on an annual basis and over the warm season (May–September). The rate of increase has...

Development of a Demand Sensitive Drought Index and its application for agriculture over the conterminous United States

A new drought index is introduced that explicitly considers both water supply and demand. It can be applied to aggregate demand over a geographical region, or for disaggregated demand related to a specific crop or use. Consequently, it is more directly related than existing indices, to potential drought impacts on different segments of society, and is also suitable to use as an index for drough...
